چکیده

The NMR spectra of finely dispersed ice were investigated. It is shown that the narrow NMR signal from the ice is caused by the mobile water molecules on the ice-gas and iceteflon interfaces. The mobile water phase is in comparatively steady quasi-equilibrium with the strongly defective structure of the bulk ice. The relation of the superficial ice properties with the size of the ice grain is discussed.

Why Is Ice Slippery?

T freezing of water and melting of ice are among the most dramatic examples of phase transitions in nature. Melting ice accounts for everyday phenomena as diverse as the electrification of thunderclouds, in which the liquid layer on ice chunks facilitates the transfer of mass and charge during collisions between them; frost heave powerful enough to lift boulders from the ground (see PHYSICS TOD...

Phase diagram of water between hydrophobic surfaces.

Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that there are at least two classes of quasi-two-dimensional solid water into which liquid water confined between hydrophobic surfaces freezes spontaneously and whose hydrogen-bond networks are as fully connected as those of bulk ice. One of them is the monolayer ice and the other is the bilayer solid which takes either a crystalline or an amorphous fo...

Mobility of D atoms on porous amorphous water ice surfaces under interstellar conditions

Aims. The mobility of H atoms on the surface of interstellar dust grains at low temperature is still a matter of debate. In dense clouds, the hydrogenation of adsorbed species (i.e., CO), as well as the subsequent deuteration of the accreted molecules depend on the mobility of H atoms on water ice. Astrochemical models widely assume that H atoms are mobile on the surface of dust grains even if ...

Mobility of haloforms on ice surfaces

We have investigated the mobility of bromoform (CHBr3) and chloroform (CHCl3) on amorphous solid water and crystalline ice surfaces, by monitoring their adsorption and desorption behavior using temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Up to its desorption temperature, of 140 K, CHCl3 does not diffuse over the crystalline ice surface, wherea...

Distinguishing Amorphous and Crystalline Ice by Ultralow Energy Collisions of Reactive Ions

Ion scattering using ultralow energy projectiles is considered to be a unique method to probe the nature of molecular surfaces because of its capacity to probe the very top, atomically thin layers. Here, we examine one of the most studied molecular solids, water-ice, using this technique. When ice surface undergoes the amorphous to crystalline transition, an ultralow energy reactive projectile ...
